The QLD boys

Well our beautiful QLD boys – Alaula Neo 2 Feathers aka Neo and Alaula Blazing Bear aka Jiminy have been thoroughly enjoying their new home in our ‘Sunshine State’ with their forever family. We get beautiful photos and video’s of them going on lots of beach runs and they love spending time going into work with one of their mums. Here’s a couple of our favourite updated photo’s of them. Absolutely stunning boys you melt our hearts.❤❤

Asking for Expressions of Interest!!

The Berry Boys

Many of people have expressed an interest in our current ‘Berry Boys’ litter,(Tenterpride Phoenix Sun aka Kona and Aaungara Koolaroo aka Mouse) which is great, as they are very adorable boys. However unlike our other litters, this litter is being watched very closely by us, why you may ask?. Well…. let me explain! . The reason these boys have not yet been offered for sale is because 1) being Kona’s first litter we didn’t know what to expect from her and her puppies regarding what type of mum she would become and what sort of temperaments or traits she may have passed to her puppies and  2) although Mouse is a super cute and cuddly dog he can display timidness in certain situations. So mating this pair was a ‘watch this space’ type situation. We are happy to report that although its early days the boys seem to be adjusting nicely to the world even though we have had some hiccups along the way. They are progressing well in their socialisation training and are making great headway with their developmental skills.

Primo AKA Dude all growed up

We received a photo last night via the Facebook of a more mature Primo and he has certainly transformed into a handsome man.

So much happening!!

Fudge loves the tunnel

So much has happened this week. Firstly the pups are learning to explore and are loving the new enrichment toys in the playpen such as the tunnel and the snuffle mat (which I will expand on next in my blog including how to make your own). Fudge and Blue are also becoming pro’s at navigating the wobble board which is used to help the pups to develop motor skills such as body awareness, balance, muscle condition and strength. The wobble board is also used as a trigger to help strengthen their ‘CER’ (Conditional Emotional Response) which they passed with flying colours with no negative responses at all and loved making the board move.

We also had our first outing into the big backyard. They certainly didn’t love the grass the first time but there is plenty of time for that in the near future.

“Stay close boys I’m not sure about this green stuff “Blue says.

“Dad what are u doing all the way over there” Blackberry says.

Our new digs!!

The “Berry Boys” as they have become affectionately known as, got some extensions added to their whelping box this weekend. They are now living in luxury with the expanded play area where new things will be added as needed. Kona has started to wean them so goats milk and food has been added to their diets and although they arent to fond on eating this new thing called “food” they do love standing in it and will hopefully get the hang of putting it in their mouths instead of making cute little milk or food paw prints in the new digs.

The dreaded dew claw…

At some point most TT owners have had to deal with a torn dew claw. It just one of those hazards that these little guys have to contend with, they are low to the ground, agile, super fast and typically fear nothing. The result is when chasing a ball or any other object they can be prone to tearing the dew claws and at times they won’t even help or show signs that this has happened.

Today Dawn chased the ball 3 times to run a  total distance of 15 metres and she ripped her right dew claw. The only sign it happened was her licking her foot when she reached the top of the stairs. Then the tell tale signs of blood dripping from the foot.

It’s relatively easy to treat, if the nail is completely off and hanging then take it all the way off. If it’s just bleeding then you can pad and wrap the foot, they heal fast so its normally a big issue. The nail will grow back, it may be malformed at first but eventually after clipping it will start to grow out straight. Use some antiseptic solution if you have some before wrapping. This does not constitute vet advice, always seek the advice of a vet, if you’re not near  a vet this is step one before you get to your vet.

Consider full dew claw removal. This is a point we usually make to our new puppy owners, at some stage you will usually be desexing and during that procedure it’s a quick couple of cuts and sutures and you can remove this potential hazard from your TT life forever. Discuss with with your vet.

Puppy Enquiries **Please Read First**

So you have decided to buy a puppy from Alaula Tenterfield Terriers what happens now?

Here at Alaula Tenterfield Terriers we take raising our puppies for the right forever homes very seriously. It is this reason why we have decided to keep all our puppies until a minimum of 10 weeks of age and depending on how the puppies are faring, it could be extended till 12 weeks (please consult our calendar for important dates, such as when to view pups etc) .

Why do you keep them for so long you may ask, when other breeders will arrange for your little ones to be ready at 8 weeks? With the growing numbers of dogs these days that are exhibiting behaviour problems we passionately believe in making sure that the puppies that we are breeding are of sound temperament. For us to do that, to the best of our ability, we require full access to our puppies over the critical first 10-12 weeks of their lives.

So, what does that actually mean and why is that so important?
Well during the above period puppies learn the following associated behaviours: dominance, submission, basic communication skills such as attention seeking, guarding through toys and food, emotional responses such as fear or lack thereof, social interactions with both animals and humans, reactivity to noises and problem-solving abilities. These behaviours are learnt through the interactions between mum and litter mates as well as our positive training techniques and programs such as the “Puppy culture program”. As you can imagine socialisation and positive training for conditional emotional responses (or CER as it is often referred to) that the puppies are learning from the above behaviours takes knowledge, time and patience. We feel that getting this right needs those extra couple of weeks to give our puppies those building blocks and sturdy foundations, that will make for a stronger well-adjusted puppy for you to take home.

So now we have the time frame question out of the way you’re probably still wondering where do you go from here?
Your next step is to fill out a puppy application form below.

Why a puppy application, you ask?
As discussed above, at Alaula we want to make sure that our puppies go to the right homes, so you are probably wondering how we do this? There are two ways we go about this firstly as the puppies develop and we start to see their personalities (at approx 5-6 weeks) we will start to have an idea on the type of people/families that would best suit each pup. At approx 7 weeks of age each pup will be aptitude tested, by an outsider, to reveal the raw material of the pups individual temperaments. It is important to do this at this time, as the puppies have already learnt inherited behaviours that make them dogs, but have not yet had the range of experiences to influence the test results. We then match your puppy applications with our aptitude tests and our personal feelings about each pup to make our decisions on which pup would suit which person/family. Your puppy applications are vital in helping us to determine which puppy would best suit your lifestyle and living arrangements so please be 100% honest on your applications so we can make an informed decision on which pup would best suit you.

Does this mean we (potential owner) don’t get a say in which puppy we like?
Honesty there isn’t a yes and no answer to this question. On your applications there are questions regarding your preferences and therefore we believe that we can match a pup/pups to you that you will love but if for any reason you are unhappy about the selected pup/pups we choose you can simply choose not the buy that pup from that litter.

Download the form below and open in Adobe Reader as the form is live and you can simply type directly onto the form and click the buttons for your answers and email back. (tip if the form isn’t editable when you click it then save and open on your desktop)
